島崎藤村『若菜集』詩「初恋」英語訳(English Translation)

Spring dreams are enchanting, whether they be reminiscence of good ol’ days or aspirations for days to come. This daydream-like poem has made Toson Shimazaki (1872-1943) a poet remembered by many Japanese people.
春の夢は魅惑の夢。古き良き時代の思い出、やがて来る日への期待。島崎藤村は、この幻想的な詩によって、多くの人々に記憶されています。

This poem, “First Love”, contains all we need to get connected with childhood memories, especially of puppy love. The change of hairdo marks a coming of age. A thrill comes by recognizing a slight change in the look of your love interest particularly when it indicates maturity. An act of giving and receiving strengthens intimacy.

この詩は、子供のころの思い出、とりわけ淡い初恋を思い起こす要素がちりばめられています。例えば、髪型の変化が成人を意味するのですが、気になる人が大人っぽく変身するとドキッとしたり、何かをあげたりもらったりすることで親密さが増したり。

The third stanza is quite unique for its sensual tone. It represents growth of love as the stanzas proceed. From an exchange of gaze to gifts, and now the physical distance doesn’t get in the way developing a closer bond.

第三連に入ると、官能的なトーンが加わって、独特の雰囲気を帯びてきます。詩としての進行に合わせるように恋が進行します。視線のやり取りから、物のやり取りへ、そしてより親密なつながりが生まれるとき、二人の間に物理的距離がなくなっていく。

This poem, First Love, is not just a poem of puppy love but has achieved Japanese phonetic and rhythmic perfection. Fixed number of syllables and phonetic repetition have made this poem  elegant and easy enough to recite, which is why this poem is remembered by so many people.

もちろん、淡い初恋を歌っただけではありません。日本語の音韻やリズムが完璧で、定型詩と繰り返される音韻が、優雅かつ口ずさみやすく、それもあって多くの人の記憶に残っているのでしょう。

We can’t live in a daydream. We need to live this moment and live on our lives. Our lives, however, get hard and we sometimes feel disintegrated, fragmented and trapped in negativity. Daydream helps us reconnect with what we have deep down, which sustains us and helps us survive with its magic to unwind our strained thoughts and views on what surrounds us and to shed light on what we hoard in the back of our mind. Those colors of green and red of apple trees, those pain and joy, those bonds you created with someone you really care. All comes up into light when you are in a daydream.

夢の中に生きることはできません。この瞬間、この人生を生きなければならない。しかし、時に自分がバラバラでお先真っ暗に思えることもある。でも、夢によって、私たちは心の奥底にあるものとつながれるので、その魔法のような力で、がんじがらめになっていた考え方を解きほぐしてもらい、忘れてしまっていたような記憶に光をあててもらえる。その力で、日々を生き抜くこともできたりするのです。林檎の木の緑や赤、苦しみや喜び、大切な人との絆。夢のような思いの中で、こうしたものが立ち現われもするのです。

まだあげ初めし前髪の
林檎のもとに見えしとき
前にさしたる花櫛の
花ある君と思ひけり

やさしく白き手をのべて
林檎をわれにあたへしは
薄紅の秋の実に
人こひ初めしはじめなり

わがこゝろなきためいきの
その髪の毛にかゝるとき
たのしき恋の盃を

Sea Roar: Spring Dreams

島崎藤村『若菜集』詩「潮音」英語訳(English Translation)

Toson Shimazaki (1872-1943) has been considered a founder of Japanese modern poetry. In this poem with beautiful imagery of the sea, not only did he sing about the arrival of spring but also ushered in the new era of poetry with subtle metaphor. So what’s behind the social change and subsequent arrival of the new era?
島崎藤村(1872-1943)は、日本の近代詩の創始者とされています。春の海を詠ったこの詩は、春の訪れだけでなく、仄かな比喩によって新しい時代を迎えたことを宣言してもいます。社会が新しい時代を迎え入れるとは、どのようなことなのでしょうか。

Just as the tides sweep in, creative minds and sources abound out there. Each of them has unique quality but has stayed dormant. Roars of the sea, rich and resonant, toll the arrival of the new season. Then comes a poetic statement to let open the outlet for new voices, which then merge into one big sonorous roar to let them heard.

潮が押し寄せるように、創造の志や源泉が世の中には溢れています。それぞれが個性を持ってはいるが、声を上げるには至っていない。深く豊かな潮の音が新しい季節を感じさせるように、詩人の声は、新たな表現の糸口を開き、人々に声を与え、やがて結集したその声は大きな響きとなる。

This interpretation of mine definitely refers to artistic, social and political changes that often start with one small but sincere, powerful voice. Give a listening ear to voices around you, you will find likely-minded people and then make a difference in the world. Listen. Did you hear them speak out? Appreciating the broad and clear imagery and phonetics of this poem helps us stay generous and broad-minded and appreciate what spring brings.

この解釈は、芸術や社会や政治の変化を指しています。多くの場合、一人の小さな、しかし誠実で力強い声から始まる社会の変化。身の回りの声に耳を傾ける。志を同じにする人が必ずいる。そして、世の中のためにできることがある。そんな響きが耳に届いてきませんか。清々しくおおらかな詩のイメージと音の響きが、心を豊かにしてくれる、春の趣を一層味わい深くしてくれますね。

島崎藤村、『落梅集』詩「椰子の実」英語訳

This post is going to be another unusual post because I’m going to introduce a Japanese song to give another perspective on the concept of “Home.” The poetry below is originally written by Toson Shimazaki (1872-1943). Romanticism in his poems has reached to a great height of ever-green lyricism. Combined with melodic elegance and innocence, nostalgia and reminiscences of the past are conjured up in a pleasant way. His attempt to create a longer verse in a modern style at the dawn of modern Japanese literature was a great success, leaving some poems nationally popular to the extent which some senior citizens still recite them on top of their head. This is considered to be one of the best poems representing the general sentimentality of Japanese people.

今回はいつもと違って日本語の歌を紹介します。これもまた「Home」という概念に違った見方を提供してくれます。以下の詩は、島崎藤村のものですが、そのロマンティシズムは瑞々しい抒情性を放っています。薫り高い青春の調べに乗って、在りし日の追憶と郷愁が甘く湧き上がるのです。近代日本文学の夜明けとともに彼が打ち出した近代的な抒情詩。それは成功を収め国民的人気を得たのです。諳んじることができる年輩者がいるほどです。感傷深い日本人の精神性を最もよく表している詩と言えるでしょう。

To many Japanese people, the concept of “Home” has been linked strongly to land. It is something you picture in mind when you are most away from where you were. It is something you have lost. It is something you will never get back. The sentimentality of Japanese people is characterized by these concepts of loss, unattainableness. Throughout history, people have shown keen sympathy for pathetic stories of tragic heroes and samurai warriors and people in exile.

多くの日本人にとって、「Home」という概念は土地と強く結びついています。自分がいたところから最も離れたときに心に浮かぶ何か。失った何か。戻ることのできないところ。日本人の感傷深さは、こうした喪失や手にできないものに対するのが特徴です。歴史を通じて、悲劇的英雄や故郷を離れざるをえなかった人々の哀しい物語に強い同情を誘われるのです。

Washed ashore is a coco
From an island whose name I never know

Far away is your homeland
How many months your voyage’s spanned

Fully grown is your mother tree
With ever-growing palms forming a canopy

Sailing with no one but me
Nights have been spent on the restless sea

Clasped to my bosom
The coco reminds me how far-off I have become

Over the foreign waters sets the sun
Through my cheeks briny tears start to run

My longing will sail the form
And some day find its way home
